K+K Street Food which is gearing up to open from December like to introduce the creative and tireless team who helped to shape the brand and space in Boxpark Croydon. The team joined us from the beginning when K+K was just a dream and the team helped us turn that dream into a reality to bring the best Sri Lankan grab and go concept to the Londoners. We’re keen to show our appreciation and to introduce them to you.
Design and material
The Yard Creative (TYC)
The Yard Creative, creative catalysts, specialising in Research, Strategy and Design, led by Laurence Pugh, Director of Interiors, and Alice Richardson, Interior Designer, created our new ‘Colombo Kitchen’ street food concept, brought to life in our Boxpark shipping container making it the perfect place for those looking to immerse themselves into the local Sri Lankan art, culture and food. TYC are the creative team who designed and delivered the branding, interior and experience. www.theyardcreative.com
TYC, in turn, have been supported by a number of suppliers who provided art and deco to reflect traditional Sri Lankan toddy bar. Some of the key materials bought the colonial look are:
We wanted to reflect the rustic style of Sri Lanka street food with a modern twist by using the beautiful custom-made patina copper and Metal Sheets.
Our bespoke blue and distressed red finish table and chairs supplied by the bespoke furniture specialists, brings back the memory of us sitting in a Sri Lankan corner tea shops having a sip of tea and short eats.
Leaders in wall coverings, Muraspec made for us, by special request, the patina copper wallpaper and white textured paper creating a refreshing mix of warm and cool tones featured throughout our toddy bar space providing an exquisite, rustic backdrop that is perfectly reflecting the Sri Lankan colonial-era. Plant Plan
No Sri Lankan restaurant would be complete without lush, verdant plants. Plant Plan provided our banana tree plants and the hanging plants to reflect the tropical modernism.
Based in South Wimbledon, Franco Shopfitters have more than 20 years of experience in the fitting restaurant and retail outlets. Their build team bought the vision of K+K team and TYC’s creative interior elements with the aesthetic approach of using the light, space and materials to create the K+K Boxpark container into an elegantly rustic and modern Sri Lankan street food restaurant.
Art and culture
Since the 1800s, masks have been used in Sri Lankan cultural events to portray characters from popular folktales and in stories told through dancing. The various types of masks used in our restaurant are custom made for us in the picturesque coastal town of Ambalagonda, the home of traditional masks to bring the artistic and cultural elements into our deco.
Nool Batik is a Colombo-based clothing brand with an ethos that celebrates bold and colourful ethnic wear which has been practiced by Sri Lankan artisans for close to a century. Sri Lankan batik is known for its intricate streaks, bold motifs and vibrant colour combinations. Nool Batiks created our staff uniforms made of orange batik patterns and featuring buttons made of coconut shells which resemble our logo icon.
K+K brings you the authentic home cooking flavour through freshly ground spices made by Gayathri which can make food sing. They add something special to our flavoursome dishes. Gayathri, whose spices ensure that our food has the taste of our mother’s cooking.
Nanditha Gamage started selling her unforgettably delicious milk toffee five years ago and we are convinced that her homemade confections are the best in Colombo. We cannot walk past shops selling her toffee without buying some. Therefore, we’ve decided to partner with and bring her treats to the UK and let our customers taste a bit of Sri Lanka for themselves. From December onwards you can place orders for Nandi’s Milk Toffees either from K+K Street food Boxpark Croydon or online.
The best food is inviting: it beckons you to come, try and to share with friends and family. Inna Redina is the world-class gastronomic photographer behind the tempting shots of our food.
We want K+K to be known as the place for Sri Lankan food in London and Rank Strikers helps us reach our customers and helps them find out about us online. They support us with web design and digital marketing including SEO, content and social media support.
All these talented and amazing organisations have come together to make K+K what it is. In this sense, there is no better portrait of Sri Lanka’s heritage, its culture and its food, than the inimitable work of this great team.
